UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is beginning to use cryptocurrency mining in an effort to raise donations.
UNICEF Australia launched what they are calling “The Hope Page”, a site that mines cryptocurrency using visitors’ computer power. A statement from UNICEF reads: “Mining is perfectly safe for your computer. If you’re ever worried about power consumption, turn down the amount of processing power you’re donating”.
All cryptocurrency that is mined through TheHopePage is converted to fiat, and donated to UNICEF Australia.
The browser miner is powered by an opt-in version of the Coinhive API, AuthedMine, and mines the monero cryptocurrency, and there are more than 2,000 people using this page to mine for UNICEF.
UNICEF has reportedly been looking into leveraging emerging technologies to raise awareness for humanitarian crises and to collect donations. Utilizing blockchain technology to do so is a perfect use of its potential.
